Efficiency is often equated with profitability, but it also enables a practice to improve patient care. Here are some "Do's & Don'ts that may benefit your practice:
Do:
- Stagger lunch breaks by your staff.
- Regularly keep tabs on your paperwork.
- Ask patients, not staff, to fill out information forms.
- Purchase an automated patient reminder phone system.
- Praise and recognize your staff for their efforts.
Don't:
- Have the front desk receptionist answer phone calls.
- Under train your staff.
- Exclude staff from brainstorming sessions.
- Be afraid to try out new ideas.
- Operate in the past when redesigning your practice.
Critical to ongoing efficiency is a commitment and willingness to continually change.
Despite the fact that people tend to fight change, change is good. A sterling example is Microsoft. Under Bill Gates' leadership, executive were asked to "reinvent" the company every six months in order to stay current with the times.
Health care is undergoing constant evolution. Think of change as learning, you never want to stop doing either.
